Technical Constraints Book Design
One of the projects I was given during the course of my studies in graphic design Dawson College, was to design a technical constraints informational book that contained printing process information like dpi, bleed, trapping and more. Our project brief was to include a set amount of information, diagrams and charts and present it in a visually interesting, but still informative way. The cover and book design, layout, printing and binding of the book was also part of the design process for the project. I decided to create a design that played visually with the printing process. I experimented quite a bit with layout since the information itself was kind of dry and I wanted to make it as visually unique as possible in the hopes of getting readers to engage with the material.
This project was challenging and one of my first forays into book design. I believe I managed to successfully create a visually interesting and informative book design. As with my later project designing a book, the process was rewarding. I thoroughly enjoyed playing with layout and experimenting with presenting the largely technical diagrams and charts. Overall it was a chance to practice creative problem solving in the implementation of this design.
